More about options for resizing

In Watermarkly’s PNG converter, you can not only convert to PNG, but resize your image, if necessary, too. Please note that, on the right side, you will see a preview of your original image and what pixel dimensions your resized image will have. This doesn’t apply to the “Do not resize” option.

convert to png

Our image converter to PNG offers the following options for resizing.

Do Not Resize

As you might have guessed from the name, here, the pixel dimensions of your image will remain the same as the original. If this is what you need, then this option will be great for you.

Exact Width

This option allows you to enter a specific number of pixels for the width of your PNG image. Please keep in mind that the original aspect ratio will remain the same. The height of your image will be changed automatically.

Exact Height

This is option is similar to the previous one. But here you’ll need to enter the new height of your image; the width will be changed automatically. The aspect ratio will stay the same.

Exact Width and Height

This option combines the two previous ones. In other words, you’ll be able to enter a specific number of pixels for both the width and the height. Now, you’re probably wondering about the aspect ratio. After all, what if your new pixel dimensions are 1080 x 1920 px, which is 9:16 aspect ratio. And your original image has the 2:3 aspect ratio. Well, you can tell the app to crop your image, thus changing the aspect ratio. Alternatively, the PNG converter can fill the rest of the image with generated or white pixels.

Not Larger Than

Here, you can also enter pixel dimensions for the height and the width. But, unlike the previous option, the PNG converter will resize your image so that its pixel dimensions aren’t larger than the ones that you entered. For instance, if your original image is 3800 x 5800 px and you enter 1080 x 1920 px, you will get an image that’s around 1080 x 1620 px. This is due to the fact that this option doesn’t change the original aspect ratio.

Percentage

This option kind of stands out from the rest because here you’ll need to enter a specific number of percent, not pixels. In other words, after converting to PNG, your processed image will be bigger or smaller by a certain percent. For instance, if you choose this option and enter 75, the pixel dimensions of your image will be smaller by 25 percent. This option is great if you need to resize your image, but don’t have specific pixel dimensions in mind.

More about the PNG Format

Before you convert image to PNG, it might be a good idea for you to learn more about this format. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster graphics file format that was developed to replace the GIF format, which is less efficient. PNG has several advantages, including lossless compression and alpha channel support for transparency.

Let’s take a look at these advantages:

  1. Transparency (Alpha Channel): A special channel that manages transparency is called the alpha channel. If you want to make bits of an image translucent or completely transparent as well as change the levels of opacity, there needs to be an alpha channel in your image. Alpha channel allows you to make pixels transparent. More to that, PNG supports gradual transparency – unlike GIF. For this reason, PNG is ideal for images with transparent background.
  2. Color Depth: PNG can handle various color depths, including indexed (8 bits per pixel), gradient (24 bits per pixel), and Truecolor (32 bits per pixel with an alpha channel). It means that your PNG images can be very detailed and of high quality.
  3. Lossless Compression: PNG supports lossless compression, which means the image quality will be great no matter what. Plus, no information from your image will be lost. Thus, you’ll be able to restore your images if necessary. Excellent quality is vital when it comes to working with graphics.
  4. Metadata Support: Your PNG images can have metadata – copyright information, camera settings, color profile, when the image was created and more. This kind of information about an image can be useful. What’s more, if you include the copyright info into your metadata, it can provide an extra layer of safety.
  5. Animation (APNG): PNG itself doesn’t support animation. But there’s a file format that’s kind of an extension of PNG. It’s called APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics). This format supports animation as well as transparency and has the same advantages as PNG.

PNG is a format that’s widely supported by various browsers, apps and software. It’s great for logos and images with text. Its popularity makes it the perfect choice for sharing and storing images. For this reason, apps to convert to PNG are rather wide-spread.

  2. Graphic Design: PNG is a popular format for professional graphic design work, especially when transparency is needed, or images contain text and very detailed elements.
  3. Icons and Logos: If you need icons and logos for an app or a website and they should have transparency and high resolution, then it’s better to save them in PNG.
  4. Medical Imaging: PNG is used for storing and sharing medical images, such as scans, due to the fact that it’s of high importance to preserve details and color accuracy.
  5. Presentations and Documents: PNG can be used for images in presentations, reports, and other documents where you need to have clear and sharp images as well as have the option to make the background transparent.
  6. Geographic Information Systems (GIS): In GIS, PNG can be used for images with cartographic data as this format supports various color levels and can display fine details accurately.
